People with disabilities often encounter challenges when seeking out effective and accessible mental health care.

For over 61 million Americans, living with a disability is a core part of their identity. While it can be a source of pride, it often necessitates accommodations to navigate a society that isn’t always built for inclusion. Under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), a disability is defined as a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities.
Many people with disabilities encounter Ableism, the devaluing of those with disabilities. In mental health care, this can look like a provider trying to “fix” a patient rather than supporting their lived experience, or dismissing mental health symptoms as “to be expected” given their physical condition.
Your medical team should be in sync. Use these questions to ensure your care is holistic and integrated:
• Could my physical conditions be impacting my mental health?
• What assessments will you conduct to better understand the problem?
• Do you have partnerships with behavioral health specialists to coordinate my care?
• Is the treatment location accessible, or are there telehealth options?
• How do I request an accommodation, such as a sign language interpreter?
